Australian financier George Carter is invited to London to discuss a major financial transaction that includes funneling a fortune from a European bank into the United States. The fortune, an accumulation of skimmed financial aid from a major world power, is a guarded secret known to only an elite few power players. Carter, a conservative businessman and ex-lawyer, agrees to become involved despite his misgivings. Carter meets with some old and new friends in Milan to put financial arrangements in place, and obtain background information on all the power players involved. What starts as a simple plan to launder a fortune through the system without incident, becomes a highly complex cat and mouse game, with deadly results. With no money trail and hundreds of millions of dollars at stake, Carter realizes that he can trust no one. Pressures and hostilities from fugitives, within his group, and in other places, as well as government authorities who’ve got a lot to gain (or lose), results in a twisted web of international subterfuge. A desperate hunt begins for the mastermind of the scheme that will take Carter across Europe into Central America. But who is this elusive chameleon that no one can touch and how far is Carter willing to go to find him and protect his own investment? The provocative, edge-of-your-seat storytelling is filled with a series of fierce twists and turns and resonating, engaging characters. Based on true events that Russell experienced while a financier, this one is a thriller that keeps the reader guessing until its final pages.
